A crown or bridge can restore lost teeth, support remaining teeth and help you maintain dental health. There are several types of crown and bridges available. As your dentist, we will walk you through and discuss the best options for your particular case.

Both crowns and bridges are highly durable and may last many years, but like most restorations,  they may eventually need to be replaced.

Why do I need a crown?

  • Decayed teeth
  • Broken or cracked teeth
  • Fractured fillings
  • Tooth has root canal
  • Large areas of decay or fractures

Why do I need a bridge?

  • Fill space of missing teeth
  • Prevent teeth from drifting out of position
  • Restore smile, chewing or speaking ability
  • Upgrade denture or dental appliance

What does getting a crown/bridge involve?

In both instances, two or more appointments are needed. The first to create a mold of the crown or bridge. You will then be given a temporary crown/bridge to wear until your next appointment. On your second appointment, the crown/bridge will be checked and adjusted to make sure it fits and then will be cemented on. At the end of your treatment, you will be given instructions on proper care for your crown/bridge.

How do I care for my crown/bridge?

Although you will be given instructions on how to take care of your new crown/bridge after it has been placed, it’s important to review how to take care of it on a regular basis. Without attentive hygiene, the teeth/tooth can can become re-infected with with new areas of decay.

Brush along the gumlines carefully and floss at leas once a day. If you have a bridge, make sure to use a floss threader to clean underneath it and against the supporting tooth or implant. If supporting teeth become infected with gum disease, the whole stability of the entire restoration will be jeopardized.
